Why Exfoliate?

In a wonderful way, our skin constantly repairs and produces new skin cells. Typically, every 30 days our skin naturally sheds dead skin cells to make room for these new ones! However, sometimes these cells do not shed completely; especially as we age, our bodies our less efficient at shedding the excess dead skin cells. This build up can result in dry, flaky patches, clogged pores, breakouts, and a dull complexion. So, what are we to do? Exfoliate!!!!

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the top layer of skin, thus revealing the newer, healthier skin. This can be done in two ways:

Exfoliating Body Brush

  1. Physical Exfoliation- Manually scrubbing with with a muslin or mesh washcloth, loofah, bath brush, body brush, pumice, or any cleansing scrubs that contains granules like sugar, salt, & oats. This method is also known to boost circulation.

  2. Chemical Exfoliation- Peeling away the top layer with an acid compound. The most natural compound is Alpha hydroxy Acid (AHAs); a water- soluble acid typically derived from sugary fruits (i.e lactic acid found in Goat’s milk, or citric acids found in citrus fruits. This is generally viewed as a milder and more effective option.

The method and frequency best for you depends on skin type and age. Over exfoliation leads to redness, breakouts, and flakiness. Many dermatologist suggest 2 to 3 times a week for normal skin; if your skin can tolerate it without irritation. Those with oily skin can exfoliate more often, even daily. On the other hand, those with sensitive or aging skin may choose once a week or stick to the milder, chemical option; such as Goat’s milk soaps.

Whatever routine you choose, be sure to cleanse first! Cleansing the face and skin before exfoliating removes surface dirt, allowing easier access to clogged pores and dead skin cells. Afterwards, your skin will be fresh, but sensitive- so remember to apply products such as Rosewater toner, moisturizers, and sunscreen. Since the skin has been primed, these products will absorb more efficiently.
